And yet, very few actually manage to win in. In most draws on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, there are no jackpot winners, weeks after weeks. So when someone does bag the SuperEnalotto jackpot, it is not just a story but the mother of a story.

Among the few SuperEnalotto jackpot winners over the last eighteen years, the most astounding win was of a forty seven year old man in Bagnone, Tuscany. When the winning numbers were announced on Saturday, 22nd August 2009, the whole town of Bagnone ushered into unprecedented celebrations. The residents poured onto the streets and there was jubilation all around. A small town that is home to just over two thousand people witnessed something that had never happened till then. Not only did Bagnone become the home to one of the SuperEnalotto jackpot winners but it became the town that had the biggest jackpot winner of all times, till then.

The forty seven year old man who worked in the agricultural sector had won a whopping EUR 147.8 million. That amount was the biggest jackpot ever won till then. No one had previously won an equal amount or even close. There were lotteries that gave away jackpots worth more but then there were more than one winner. One specific case of a EUR 157 million jackpot was won by nine people and thus had to be split. Bagnone thus justifiably had some special celebrations. The story was even more remarkable as the person who won the jackpot had paid only EUR 2 for the ticket.

SuperEnalotto is famous and infamous for its repeated rollovers. It is one of those rare lotteries wherein the jackpots can become ridiculously precious. But not always does one get to hear the story of SuperEnalotto jackpot winners. At times, stories of almost-winners also come to light.

In March 2014, one Caterina Gentile residing in Salvaterra thought she had won a whopping EUR 34 million. She was ecstatic with her SuperEnalotto ticket but her joy was short-lived when the television presenter apologized stating that the numbers were of the draw from the previous week. Despaired, aggrieved and depressed, Caterina Gentile sued RAI, the public broadcaster of Italy, and won EUR 18,000 in compensation; not bad for a moment of joy, anxiety and disappointment.
