Lottery Jackpot Winners

The United States had its sixth largest jackpot winner in American history.
In 2014, a man who bought a Powerball lottery ticket from a Chevron gas station in the San Francisco Bay area ended up winning the $425 million Powerball jackpot. He got to choose to either receive monthly payments over the next 30 years or a lump sum of $242 million.

This comes just one year after a Powerball winner in Florida won the biggest jackpot ever in U.S. history. Before taxes, this winner took home $590 million in a one lump sum. Then last December, a delivery driver shared his winnings of $648 million with another winner of the Mega Millions lottery game. Lottery officials say the reason why the jackpot amounts are increasing is because of the price increases of the tickets. For example, the Powerball tickets used to cost $1, but recently they were raised to $2. This might not seem like a significant amount of money, but when you consider the millions of people who purchase these tickets then it doubles the amount that goes into the jackpot pool.

As of December of 2014, there was a very interesting lottery jackpot winner in Florida. This winner was actually a convicted sex offender who won $3 million from a Super Millions scratch off ticket that he purchased at a 7-Eleven in Mount Dora. Despite him pleading guilty to attempted sexual battery over a decade ago, there are no laws in Florida that forbid sexual offenders from winning the lottery. The winner, Timothy Poole, elected to take his winnings in one lump sum, which would be about $2.2 million. A friend of Poole’s reported that he is going to invest some of that money in his mother’s taxi cab business, which is where he was working prior to winning the money.
